The Royal KMM is close to being my favorite typewriter. They started making them in 1938 and continued until almost 1950. The older ones had round buttons instead of the square shift keys--there are a lot less of the round button ones than the squared. Aside from changing the shape of the buttons, they also started making most of the frame from aluminum instead of the older steel. Hence, the earlier, rarer ones are about twice as heavy.
But other than these two things, they changed nothing. The insides of the later models are every bot as sturdy and solid as the ones made previously. These machines were built to last, so far as I can tell, they held up better than any other typewriter.
I hope to offer as many of them as possible, but I'm limited on several fronts. 1st, they take time to refurb. As I've said many times, I go through these machines carefully, and give attention to each moving part. 2nd, I have a hard time keeping them on the shelf. By the time I finish one, often before I can even get it listed on this site, it gets picked up by someone. But I'll continue to work on making them more available.
If you take a look at the Barney Miller series, you'll see this model made an appearance here and there throughout the entire series. It appears first on Fish's desk. Then on Wojo's. Then on Harris's. And then back to Fish's desk (which now belongs to Detrick.) It's got a gray color to it, but this is the model they were using, as indicated here:
The typewriter listed here, had been completely refurbished, and every single function is in perfect working order. I have the original draw-band, and that will come with the purchase (I replace it even when it's working to save it from being worn any more than it already is).
If ordering outside the Cincinnati area, there'll be an added $30 for shipping. If you're local, call me and set up an appointment, and I can give you a full demonstration, along with a crash-course on using manual typewriters.
