The Royal KMM is still my all-time favorite typewriter... and yet I've never painted one before. Until now! I labored over colors for a long time before finally choosing emerald green, and to be honest, I still don't know why I chose that. But I'm glad I did. The colors really pop on this oldie but goodie.
And of course, I went over this typewriter with a fine-tooth comb, making sure all mechanical functions were in perfect order. This thing is ready to do some serious work.
The Royal KMM is probably one of the most difficult typewriters to paint. Aside from the covers being removed, sanded, and painted, the frame itself, while remaining attached to the innards, has to be painted. That means using a lot of paper and masking tape to protect everything during the process. Usually, I'm able to take the covers off and do mechanical work on the innards while the covers dry. But with the KMM typewriter, I have to wait until all the mechanical work is done before touching the paint. Then test it all with it fully painted.
But enough about the process. The finished model is a beauty, and retains all of the Royal KMM hardware sturdiness that this model has earned for itself.
